Free Example of a Military Resume
People ask me "How do I transfer skills from one career or job to another?" In the civilian world this is a simple matter of analyzing the skills you have now and matching them to opportunities you wish to pursue.
Unfortunately matching military skills to civilian job opportunities is not as simple.
A critical point in converting your military skills and experience into civilian terms is to remember that most civilians are not familiar with military jargon. You will need to translate military terms into civilian terms in order to reach your reader.
Also remember that many of your military skills may not be transferable.
I served five years active with the U.S. Navy. When I exited the military I found that many of my skills were not transferable to civilian life. I mean let's face it, who wants to hire you to track a jet and shoot it down with a missile or who was going to hire me to track submarines into the wee hours of the morning.
On the flipside, the radio telephone (RT) nets and communication procedures that we used during those missile shoots and sub tracking was transferable.
I found out that I did have military experience that employers were looking for. Skills such as:
Damage Control (fire fighting)
Shore Patrol (security/law enforcement)
Watch/Work Bill Coordinator (planning and logistics)
Division Training Petty Officer (teacher/instructor)
All of these were marketable.

Veterans are looked upon as dependable leaders and durable employees who are well organized and loyal. Just think of all the skills you have gained from being in the military. Skills such as:
Supervision
Project Management
Planning
Organization
Logistics
Computer
Training
Communications
These are all marketable in today's work environment.
What you need is some help in putting those skills into a professional resume.
Here is a free example of a military resume that has been converted to civilian life. This is a very basic and simple resume based on the skills and experience we just discussed. It's for illustration purposes. I will provide you with some links to other, more intense resumes you can evaluate.
Also notice I am using a home address and not a military address. This is due to the fact that I was mostly at sea during my time in the Navy and unless we were steaming with an aircraft carrier or visiting a port somewhere, mail was prone to be late or non-existent and it had a very bad habit of getting lost. Of course now that the Internet is on the scene, you can email your resume just about anywhere and get responses back to your email address.
Eventually, though, you will have to provide something on paper so you will need to provide the employer with an address that is stable.
